In
October 2006, the PCC, noting that 21 years had passed since the Vision 85
project produced the Upper Room and ancillary facilities at St Mary's
Church, agreed that the opportunity was now there to further develop that
initiative, particularly as a response to the role which St Mary's now has
within the village community and in order to improve and extend that
position to the benefit of the village and parish as a whole.
The PCC was thinking particularly of (i) the additional use
which could be made by the community as a whole of the area within the
Church building currently occupied by the 'new' accommodation brought about
as a result of Vision 85, ie. the Upper Room, the Occasional Vestry, the
Choir Vestry and the associated corridor area; and (ii) the alternative and
fresh uses which could be made both by the St Mary's congregation and the
community as a whole of the Lady Chapel.
In
short, a review of the whole area which prior to 1985 was constituted
by the North Aisle/Lady Chapel.
The PCC decided to bring these various reordering strands together in a new
Vision, viz. Vision 06, with the detail of the proposals at that stage being
worked up by Stephanie Ingham, a member of the congregation who is also a
professional architect.
In
consequence a presentation with detailed drawings/plans was made by
Stephanie to the congregation on Advent Sunday of the PCC's detailed
proposals for Vision 06 (and this was repeated at an Epiphany service in
early 2007).
Comments from the congregation were duly considered by the PCC as part of the ongoing development of the proposals. The re-ordering of the West Porch and the replacement of the plain boarded internal door with a new glass door (in memory or Helen & Ken Garner) constituted phase 1 of Vision 06 and was achieved for Advent 2007 The PCC has identified the re-ordering of the Lady Chapel as phase 2 of Vision 06. A scheme for the re-ordering has been drawn up (with Stephanie Ingham as the duly appointed architect to the PCC), and approved by the PCC during the first half of 2008. The scheme is designed to create a Lady Chapel which will be: (a) a place of serenity, beauty & peace; (b) a place which people can use for private prayer; (c) a place where small groups of people can gather for worship such as midweek services, weddings and funerals (where attended by small numbers of people). This
scheme has been discussed in detail with a DAC Sub-Committee, and
subsequently submitted to the full DAC. It is hoped that
the scheme will be recommended by the DAC at its July 08 meeting, so that a
faculty petition can be submitted, with the aim of achieving completion of
phase 2 of V06 for Advent 2008'.
After the Lady Chapel proposals have been finalised, the remaining phases
will be considered in detail. This is a project which will occupy several
years to bring to total completion. This analysis will be updated regularly.
